Cross-country ski trails are an excellent way to get out and enjoy New York's beautiful winter landscape. Although most xc ski trails in my area are maintained, you can also find backcountry trails. You'll be able to glide down unrestricted snow covered paths and feel the real wilderness.
There are several Xcountry ski trails nearby in the Adirondack Mountains. Hudson Valley, Catskills, and the Hudson Valley. These areas often have more snow that other parts of the state. They are therefore usually open earlier than others and stay open longer.
Southern Adirondacks offers some of most scenic xc-ski trails in the region. For example, the 55km of groomed trails at Garnet hill combine easy cruising trails with Skullbuster which is a difficult downhill course once used by the Olympic downhill racers. The lodge is a great spot to have a drink after a workout or to just relax and enjoy the view.
You can also find a range of difficulty levels and options for beginners and seasoned athletes alike at the Mount Van Hoevenberg cross-country ski center, located at the site of the 1980 Olympic winter games. They offer more than 50km of trails including 4km that are world championship rates.

There are some excellent xc ski trails in the High Peaks, including the iconic ski route to Avalanche Pass. You can also learn how to backcountry ski at SUNY Canton’s Harriet Hollister State Rehabilitation Area. It features a 20 mile network of trails that have been marked and groomed for cross-country skiers.
If you're looking for a more mellow and scenic ski trail, consider checking out the 2.5 miles of xc ski trails at the Cortland County Forest Preserve. The 430-acre property features a variety of meadows, forests, and ponds that you can explore on xc skis.
It is easy to get started with xcskis. Bring your skis/boots to the trailhead.
Be courteous and be safe when out on the trails. To allow faster skiers to pass, you should always move off the tracks. Do not fall on the trail if you don't want to hit other people or things.
You can check the trail conditions and availability with your local park or forest. You can also contact DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry at any of your state parks or forests for information about trail conditions and updates.

There are hundreds of miles worth of xc skiing trails throughout the state. These range from quiet rail-trails to the wild beauty of state forests. Some xc skiing trails can be accessed by skiers while others will require you to navigate the terrain on metal-edged snowshoes.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced skier, there's a place for you in the state of New York. We've got mellow, easy trails to explore in the Adirondacks, backcountry terrain to test your skill in the High Peaks, and more. These are some of our favorite ski trails for xc in the area.
FAQ
Do you worry about missing something while traveling?
Yes, I often forget stuff. This is most common on short trips. Fortunately, I always bring everything I need, so I don't run out.
For example, I always have my passport with me. And I always check whether I have enough money when I buy tickets.
I also always have my phone charger with me. To store any other items, I keep them in a small bag.
These are the things that you must remember when traveling.
You will find yourself in situations that leave you with very little time for making decisions when you travel. You should be ready to improvise.
It is possible to be stuck anywhere for hours, days or even weeks. You can plan ahead to ensure you have water, food, shelter, and somewhere to sleep. If you don't have a plan, you might have to make do.
In these cases, you'll probably have to rely on what you know how to do best. This means that you will need to make quick decisions based on your intuition and experience.
Sometimes, however, you will not have any other choice. It could happen that you are stranded without cell phone coverage, run out of gas, or have been robbed. You'll need to adapt quickly to these situations.
The key to success is to stay calm, remain focused and act decisively. Don't panic. Instead, be calm and focus on what you can do.
For example, if you're lost in the woods, you can choose which direction to go. For those who are hungry, berries and mushrooms can be eaten. You can also drink rainwater and melt snow if you feel thirsty.
Or if you're tired, you can rest. If you're cold, you can bundle up. If you're wet, you can change clothes. No matter what you do, it will make you feel better to stay positive.
What should you bring on vacation?
You must know what you want from your holiday. Not just packing clothes. Consider where you're going and how much time you'll be staying there.
Think about the activities that you are interested in. Scuba diving is a great option if you're going to exotic destinations. If you plan on staying longer, you may want to attend local festivals.
You should let the people who are going to be caring for you know if you have any medical issues.
What snacks can I bring on the plane?
You can choose from many types of snacks when you fly. You may want to consider bringing along any food items that you know you enjoy eating while traveling.
You might pack chocolates or other sweet treats, such as crisps, biscuits, and nuts.
For something more savory, you might want to pack cheese or crackers.
It's also worth considering what kind of beverages you'd prefer to have aboard. You might prefer something hot or cold.
Whatever kind of snack or drink that you choose to bring along with you, make sure everything is packed securely.
This way, you won't need to worry about them getting damaged during travel.
What documents should be kept handy while on the road?
To make it easy to find important documents on the road, keep copies at home. If you plan on using an ATM machine, you may want to keep a copy of your passport, driver’s license and other official identification cards.
A photocopy of your passport is always a good idea so that it can be used to prove identity in case of emergency.
Don't forget to attach copies of your itinerary or reservations. These will help to keep track of where you are going and what sights you're planning to see.
Keep a copy of the flight ticket and details for your hotel reservations. You will be able to reach someone back home if there is any trouble.
Finally, it's always a good idea not to leave anything valuable unattended. Make sure you have a place to store your valuables, such as a money belt or in your luggage.
You can avoid expensive loss by checking your baggage before you travel.
Remember that it is always safer to be simple than to plan everything.
Let's just be relaxed and enjoy the journey!
